Grieving Royal Family's mourning to last seven days after the Queen's funeral

The death of Queen Elizabeth II was announced on Thursday (September 8).

Buckingham Palace announced the news writing: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

The Monarch was 96 and was said to be surrounded by Charles and Ann as she passed.

Due to the tragic news, a period of royal mourning will now be observed until seven days after the Queen’s funeral, a date which has yet to be announced, Buckingham Palace confirmed.

The announcement comes as the nation begins the first day of official mourning to the Queen's death - a Monarch who ruled for longer than any other Monarch in British history, having ascended to the throne in 1952.

Royal mourning will be observed by members of the Royal Family, royal household staff and representatives of the royal household on official duties, together with troops committed to ceremonial duties.

Buckingham Palace said royal residences will close until after the Queen’s funeral, including the Queen’s Gallery and the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace, as well as the Queen’s Gallery in Edinburgh.

Balmoral Castle and Sandringham House, the Queen’s private estates, will also close for this period, as will Hillsborough Castle, the sovereign’s official residence in Northern Ireland.

Upon the news of her passing, Charles automatically became King with Camilla now known as Queen Consort.

In his statement, King Charles said: "The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.

"We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.

"During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held."

Today, gun salutes rang out across the capital at Edinburgh Castle as well as other locations across the UK. Others parts of the world also joined in to show respect following the news of the Queen's passing.
