A grieving couple who thought they had been given the body of their newborn son were shocked to open the coffin and find it was stuffed with rubbish instead.
The devastated parents claim the hospital in charge of their son's body then handed them the body of a different boy instead of their own when they demanded their son's corpse.
Manuel Hernandez's son was born on August 9 in the municipality of Ocosingo, in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas but was taken to the emergency ward of a nearby hospital before being transferred to Palenque General Hospital in poor health.
The tot died the following day for unclear reasons and the doctors told Mr Hernandez that the boy's body would be available to pick up some hours later.
One of Mr Hernandez's relatives reportedly returned to the hospital a few hours later and brought a white coffin back to the family.
However, when they opened the coffin they are said to have found it was full of plastic bags wrapped in a sheet and the body was not there.
They went back to the hospital asking for an explanation where they reportedly gathered with other relatives.
After hours of waiting, the doctors reportedly refused to answer the parents' questions.
Mr Hernandez and his wife, who has not been named in reports, were eventually given the body of a baby boy but they claim the tot is not their son.
The Health Secretary said that they will open an investigation into the irregularities in order to sanction the culprits and find out why the necessary protocols were not activated.
The hospital is yet to comment on the claims.
