Grieving parents 'humbled' by loch lifebelts support after death of son in River Clyde

Three lifebelts with throw ropes are to be installed at Hogganfield Loch within the next two weeks following a plea from a heartbroken Glasgow couple.

Duncan and Margaret Spiers say they are “humbled” at the support they have received five years after their son Christopher’s death.

Christopher Spiers was just 28-years-old when he slipped on the banks of the River Clyde and drowned.

Speaking about their success Duncan said: “We have managed to get safety belt with the throw ropes installed at Hogganfield Loch which should be done within the next couple of weeks.

“I have been informed that everything is progressing well and that the council is waiting for the blacksmith to put them up in the next 14 days.

“We applied for the life belts just before Christmas. It has not taken that long for the campaign to be a success.

“The life belts which are there are locked away and it is only the people who have access to it who can help someone in danger.

“This is what we put across to the council and they have agreed. It is totally unexpected but excellent news.

“We feel so humble to know that it is getting done and to find out as we approach Christopher’s anniversary so it gave us some good news that way.

“It means we can keep the campaign going and show them that we are still here and we are still fighting for them.

“We don’t want anyone else to go through what we have been through. It is for Christopher and other people. We are always thinking about him, but our hearts go out to the people who have lost loved ones.

“We just feel so humble this is happening and how quickly it is happening. It is good to know that people are listening. We would like to thank the people involved who have helped us in our campaign.”
