Grieving dad of DIY SOS star, 18, 'desperately needs answers' after son dies alone

The grieving family of a severely disabled young boy who appeared on TV show DIY SOS have said they 'desperately want answers' after he died alone.

Darren Hudson says his son Ollie, 18, was admitted to hospital following stomach problems and kept in overnight on his own because of lockdown restrictions.

But Darren was getting ready to visit him the next morning when he received a devastating call at 11am on April 16.

"I thought it was going to be something to do with his diet. I turned up and they said 'unfortunately, he has passed away,'" Darren told the Daily Mail.

The family has been told the death was due to SUDEP - the sudden, unexpected death of someone with epilepsy.

Darren, who lives in Hessle, near Hull, East Yorkshire, said: "All I got told was a nurse went back to him and he was unresponsive."

He added: "We desperately need some answers."

Ollie passed away in Hull Royal Infirmary but the family say the exact cause of death has not been revealed to them.

The teen's death was not coronavirus related.

Darren is hoping to learn more about Ollie's death and an inquest will be held - although a date is yet to be set.

Oliver had appeared on the BBC show DIY SOS with adopted dad Darren, who had been struck down with a degenerative spinal condition in 2017, leaving him unable to walk.

Ollie appeared on the house renovation show in April 2019.

His funeral was held on May 12 and was limited to 10 people.

Mirror Online has contacted Hull University Teaching Hospitals for comment.
