Grieving Ayrshire families not allowed to take cord at funerals as coronavirus rules are introduced

East Ayrshire Council has today introduced new rules for funerals in order to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Mourners won't be allowed to take a cord at a loved one's funeral and they'll have to stand two metres apart.

Ceremonies will also be limited to immediate family members and mourners have been told they shouldn't shake hands either.

The statement from East Ayrshire Council reads: "Due to the current situation, we are having to put certain measures in place to protect our key workers, families and our wider communities in order to ensure that we can continue to provide our critical services in the weeks ahead.

"In line with guidance on social distancing, unfortunately we will no longer be able to allow families to take a cord. The coffin will be carried and lowered by council and funeral director staff.

"Attendance at funerals must, for the moment, be limited to immediate family members only who should follow the current guidance of staying two metres apart.

"We also recommend that mourners do not ‘shake hands’ at the end of interment services.

"We are aware that this is a widely accepted practise, however, by avoiding unnecessary contact, we can collectively do our best to reduce the spread of this virus.

"We trust that you will appreciate the need for these measures and thank you, in advance, for your assistance and understanding."
