Gridlock in city centre as Cumberland Road remains closed

Vehicles are crawling along many routes in Bristol city centre and Bedminster this evening as Cumberland Road remains closed.

Video footage shows motorists at a complete standstill on Baldwin Street down to the junction of Queen Charlotte Street and Little King Street.

Google Maps reveals congestion on all major routes through the city centre as drivers attempt to find alternative routes to using Cumberland Road which was closed last week.

Commuters are also struggling in Bedminster where lengthy queues have been building up.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix says: "Slow traffic on A370 Coronation Road in both directions from B3120 Coronation Road to A38 Bedminster Parade (Bedminster Bridge Roundabout).

"Due to traffic diverting around the planned closure of the Cumberland Road in Spike Island."

Cumberland Road was closed on the morning of January 24 following a major collapse of the riverbank.

By the afternoon, Bristol City Council warned the key route would be closed in to next week while saying its contractors would be working around the clock to stabilise the wall.

The Chocolate Path and harbour railway were already closed because of an underground landslip which council chiefs had allocated millions of pounds to repair.

But the entire embankment - between Mardyke Ferry Road and Avon Crescent - has now collapsed in to the New Cut River Avon, meaning the road above the path had to be closed too.

A council spokesperson has now said the major route could remained closed until at least mid-February.
