Gridlock and danger fears as traffic lights 'flash red and green at same time'

Motorists and cyclists are just having ‘to go for it’ and risk a head-on collision after temporary traffic lights on a key road in Bristol were stuck on red.

The malfunction happened at roadworks on Redland Road, close to the Zetland Road roundabout in Cotham on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon.

It led to long delays, particularly for traffic heading down Redland Road towards Cotham and from the station, with tailbacks all the way round Cotham Gardens.

The roadworks are due to be removed by tomorrow morning. The work was being carried out on a gas main by Wales and West Utilities, and the lights had been in place there without any problems all last week.

One Redland resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said the technical glitch worried her.

Opinion: Who's to blame for the piles of rubbish around Bristol's bins? Er... you are

The 33-year-old said: “They were just permanently red. In the end you just had to go for it.

"There were long queues either end, it's infuriating as it's the second time.

"The first time one side was red and the other was flashing red and green at the same, which is definitely not in the Highway Code.

"It's not only annoying it's really dangerous because they are close to the Zetland Road roundabout and that gets really busy.

"It can't be that hard to get right,” she added.
