Gridiron: East Kilbride Pirates at "their strongest in years" ahead of season opener

East Kilbride Pirates head coach Jamie McLaughlin insists the club have their strongest team in years as they prepare to kick-off their league campaign this weekend.

The town’s American football team were relegated last season after failing to win a single game in the Premiership North.

But McLaughlin – who replaced Ross Templeton at the helm near the end of last season – is full of confidence ahead of their Division One opener away to Aberdeen Roughnecks on Sunday.

He said: “Our current team is as talented as the Pirates have seen in a long time.

“We need to ensure that we take advantage of the talent we have and grow as a team to be ultimately successful.

“I’m excited for the opportunity we have to go up to Aberdeen and get our new era started.”

There’s also a strong local contingent in the squad with eight EK players on the roster.

Long-serving quarterback Neil Baptie is back for another season alongside running back Dougie Meechan, while wide receiver Andrew Meechan, defensive back Aaron Callaghan and defensive line Mark Stewart also make the team.

There’s also some fresh blood with rookie defensive line Allan Creer in there alongside rookie defensive backs Declan Kelly and Kyle Gatens.

Pirates chair Amanda McDonald said: “We’ve had a solid pre-season and recruited well so are feeling ready and excited for the season ahead.

“Our opening game is away to a side who have just gained promotion to D1 - but we know they’re a well organised and well prepared outfit and will be no walkover.”

Kick-off at Hazelhead Park is 2.30pm.
