Grey's Anatomy season 16 set to see Alex Karev replaced by new arrival

Grey Sloan Memorial is about to replace a fan-favourite.

Dr Alex Karev ( Justin Chambers ) was fired in the Grey's Anatomy season 15 finale due to his role in insurance fraud, along with Dr Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr) and best friend Dr Meredith Grey ( Ellen Pompeo ).

With Karev no longer the Chief of Paediatric Surgery at the hospital, Dr Miranda Bailey ( Chandra Wilson ) is now set to replace him.

According to Entertainment Weekly , former Shameless US star Richard Flood has been cast as the new head of Paediatric Surgery, Dr Cormac Hayes.

However, a new storyline will see growing tensions between Grey Sloan Memorial and new hospital Pac North, which Karev is set to join as their Chief of Surgery, where he will hire former co-workers to work under him.

Has Bailey made a huge mistake?

Meanwhile, fans will no doubt be excited by the prospect of a former series favourite making a return to the show.

Showrunner Krista Vernoff teased to TV Line earlier this year: "I’m trying to get someone back. There’s someone I’m hoping will make an appearance this year, [but] it’s a real maybe. I’m trying."

Could Sandra Oh be set to make a guest appearance as Meredith's original 'person', Dr Christina Yang?

We'll just have to keep our fingers crossed that Vernoff is successful and we find out who it is soon.

Grey's Anatomy season 16 will air in the UK in Autumn 2019.
