Grey's Anatomy fans go wild after Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo reunite on red carpet

Grey's Anatomy fans struggled to keep their cool after Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo were reunited on the red carpet.

Dempsey and Pompeo were at Disney's D23 Expo event in Anaheim with both actors attending the Disney Legends Awards Ceremony, where the two Grey's Anatomy stars were among a host of stars to be honourees of the title.

The encounter happened as the pair were talking to Yahoo Entertainment correspondent Kevin Polowy before Dempsey snatched the microphone from the reporter's grasp and tried his hand at being a interviewing journalist.

Pompeo plays titular character Meredith Grey and was married to Dempsey's character Derek Shepherd in the hugely popular medical drama and fans could not contain their excitement over the reunion.

The on-screen chemistry between the pair definitely translated in reality during the hilarious two minute interview as they divulged over a range of topics including Pompeo's new limited series, Martha Stewart, Las Vegas and of course, Grey's Anatomy.

Polowy took to Twitter to describe the scene, posting two photos of Dempsey with the microphone and Pompeo embracing her former co-star while the Yahoo employee edged out of shot for the camera.

He tweeted: "Patrick Dempsey just took my mic, interviewed Ellen Pompeo for 5 minutes, and declared himself the new host of Yahoo. Patrick Dempsey just stole my job."

People were quick to comment on the post, with many asking for the video footage of the interview.

One fan wrote: "OMG. They are reunited," followed by a loudly crying emoji. Another replied: "HEY OMG THANKS FOR THISSSS."

Polowy did not disappoint his new legion of fans as he posted the brilliant video on Friday evening

"Hi everybody, I'm on the red carpet here with Yahoo interviewing the legendary Ellen Pompeo. Ellen, what does it feel like to be a legend?

She responded: "Well, I thought we were already legends but I'm really happy that we are officially legends now," to which Dempsey replied: "It's been announced today, so thank you for that."

The pair briefly spoke about Pompeo's untitled limited series on Hulu which focuses on the true story of a Midwestern couple adopt a young girl with a rare form of dwarfism but start to suspect the child isn't who she says she is.

After getting distracted by Demspey announcing that he is working on his 'Vegas' show, which sparked Pompeo saying she loves Sin City and recommended Stewart's restaurant - The Bedford by Martha Stewart.

But main talking point was when Dempsey asked about Grey's Anatomy's 19th season where Pompeo is having a reduced role due to her work with Hulu.

She said: "I'm not going to do 30 seasons, I'm going to do eight episodes but there is someone missing from the show... I can't think of who it is?"

Pompeo continued as she teased: "Someone is missing from the show, that was a big part of the show, and it's not the same without that person..." before Dempsey interjected: "Justin Chambers!"
