‘Grey’s Anatomy’ alum Sara Ramirez comes out as non-binary

“Grey’s Anatomy” alum Sara Ramirez identifies as nonbinary, the actor said Friday in an Instagram post.

Ramirez, 44, shared a new profile photo with a fade haircut, declaring, “In me is the capacity to be Girlish boy, Boyish girl, Boyish boy, Girlish girl, All, Neither.” She added the hashtag #nonbinary.

The post received much love: Miss Peppermint, a transgender drag queen known from Season 9 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” showed support for Ramirez.

“I love you with every fiber. You are such a bright light it’s almost Hard to fathom. Thank you for sharing,” Miss Peppermint wrote. ”I can only think how many young folks will feel even more held by you. No pressure. I’m just SO PROUD. I’m in tears.”

On her social media bios, Ramirez stated a preference for “she/they” pronouns.

Ramirez played orthopedic surgeon Dr. Callie Torres, who was also part of the LGBTQ community, for a decade on the long-running medical drama. Torres initially arrived as a resident and a love interest for the long-departed George O’Malley (T.R. Knight). Torres then embarked on a brief relationship with another now-departed female surgeon (which ended because the actress Brooke Smith was suddenly fired), which caused her to struggle with her bisexuality and caused a rift with her parents.

Eventually, she met and married pediatric surgeon Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) and gave birth to their daughter, Sofia (with an assist from the dearly departed Dr. Mark Sloan). Their marriage ended after bouts of infidelity and failed attempts at reconciliation and couples’ therapy.

Ramirez left the series in May 2016, saying ”I’m deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ABC.”

Before achieving TV stardom, Ramirez broke out on stage, originating the role of the Lady in the Lake in the musical “Monty Python’s Spamalot.” It premiered in Chicago in 2005 and went on to Broadway, where Ramirez won the Tony for featured actress in a musical.
