Greta Thunberg writes climate essay for new The 1975 album

Activist Greta Thunberg has recorded an essay addressing climate change for the new 1975 album - Notes on a Conditional Form.

The 16-year-old from Sweden recites her powerful message alone over ambient music, calling for 'civil disobedience'.

The track, which was released overnight, asks listeners to 'please wake up and make the changes required possible' with a hopeful call of 'there is still time to turn everything around. We can still fix this'.

Greta's rendition will be featured as the opening song on the band's new album, but not as a single in its own right.

Fans are still waiting for an album release date.

Although the band's past three records have opened with a similar style of instrumental music, this will be the first opener to include a speech.

The award-winning The 1975, consisting of frontman Matty Healy, lead guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross MacDonald and drummer George Daniel, are currently on a world tour including gigs in Singapore and Dubai.

Thunberg rose to prominence last year after she famously protested every day for three weeks during school hours by sitting outside the Swedish parliament, calling on the government to reduce carbon emissions.

She has since become a political figure, speaking at the UN's Katowise Climate Change Conference and at the European Parliament.

Young school children have gradually followed suit and have taken part in climate change protests across the world, including outside St Peter's Square in Manchester city centre in May.
