Greta Thunberg won't visit Glasgow for COP26 climate conference

Greta Thunberg has said she has no plans to visit Glasgow for the COP26 conference on climate change.

The event is due to take place in November at the SEC on Clydeside and will be hosted by the UK Government, with world leaders like US president Joe Biden expected to attend.

The aim of the conference is to agree a global plan to tackle climate change.

But Thunberg believes COP26 should be postponed for a second time to allow vaccination rates to rise.

The 18-year-old Swedish activist has attended every major climate conference since her first protest outside the Swedish parliament two and a half years ago.

Her absence will be viewed as a blow to the UK Government.

She told the BBC: "The best thing to do would be to get everyone vaccinated as soon as possible so that everyone could take part on the same terms."

The broadcaster has produced a three-part documentary series on Thunberg, with the first part airing on Monday.

While Thunberg may be absent other global figures will be in attendance.

The Record reported last November how Glasgow is ready to welcome Joe Biden to the city for next year's COP26 conference.

The leader of Glasgow City Council has said the president-elect should "bring a waterproof" in preparation for the unpredictable autumnal Scottish weather.

COP26 was originally meant to take place this month but was delayed by a year due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

The UK Government is the official host of the event and Boris Johnson is expected to play a prominent role.

But the prospect of a new president heading to Glasgow has sparked excitement within the City Chambers.

The international summit will take place at the SEC from November 1 to 12.

COP26 was originally supposed to take place in November 2020, but was postponed due to the pandemic.
