Greta Thunberg praises the Welsh Government for stopping all new road-building projects

Climate change campaigner Greta Thunberg has welcomed the news that the Welsh Government is shelving all new road-building projects.

It was announced on Tuesday (June 22) that all new road-building projects will be stopped while its new climate change ministry conducts a wide-ranging review.

Transport now comes under the Welsh Government's climate change ministry and it is putting a hold on all road-building projects that have not yet started while it examines whether the money should be spent in other ways, such as public transport. Welcoming the news on her social media feed, the young Swedish campaigner quoted Welsh Government minister Lee Waters, who had said: "We need a shift away from spending money on projects that encourage more people to drive, and spend more money on maintaining our roads and investing in real alternatives that give people a meaningful choice.”

Deputy Climate Change Minister Lee Waters announced the review in the Welsh Parliament on Tuesday afternoon, saying it is a necessary part of Wales' effort to reduce carbon emissions.

"I don't think people realise the amount we have to do. Since 1990 we have reduced emissions by 32% and by the end of the decade we have to more than double that and it's up again by 2040," he said.

"We really do have to ramp up what we have been doing. In 10 years, we need to achieve more than the last 30 and in those years we have done the relatively easy things, there is no low hanging fruit. If we're going to hit this target we're going to have to do things differently."

But the Conservatives warned the decision was a "significant blow" for the economic recovery, and Plaid Cymru said the review cannot mean communities "are left behind".
