Gresham man charged in fatal robbery, shooting

Oct. 27--A Gresham man was ordered held without bail Sunday after prosecutors said he fatally shot a man during a robbery Thursday night.

Thomas Bishop, 41, of the 8200 block of South Wolcott Avenue, faces a first-degree murder charge for the death of 42-year-old Tepete Davis, according to Cook County court records.

Davis and another unidentified victim were walking Thursday on West 80th Street near South Ashland Avenue when Bishop and another suspect approached and demanded money shortly before midnight, according to police and Assistant State's Attorney Akash Vyas.

Bishop pulled out a gun and the victims attempted to flee, Vyas said.

Bishop chased Davis, while the other suspect went after the other victim, according to Vyas.

Bishop struck Davis with a handgun and shot him multiple times, Vyas said.

Police patrolling the area saw Bishop and the other gunman firing at the victims, according to police and Vyas.

Bishop was chased by police and shot twice, according to Vyas.

One of the gunmen had "turned and pointed a dark object in the direction of the officers," according to a police statement issued after the incident.

Bishop appeared in court Sunday with a bandage on his cheek.

The second victim was shot in the leg and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said after the incident.

The condition of the second victim and the fate of the second gunman were not addressed in court Sunday.

Davis was pronounced dead at 1:08 a.m. Friday, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

One of the victims identified Bishop as a gunman, as did police, according to Vyas.

Bishop was apprehended in the 7900 block of South Justine Street, according to court records.

Two guns were recovered at the scene, Camden said.
