Grenfell Tower victims risk being forgotten like the Hillsborough 96

The failings of Hillsborough must not happen again in the Grenfell inquiry, an expert has warned.

Professor Phil Scraton, a member of the Hillsborough Independent Panel, said key findings on the disaster were lost due to delays in bringing criminal cases to court.

He said: “If you look at Grenfell, I am concerned that those most affected – as in Hillsborough – their voices are being lost.”

The blaze at Grenfell Tower in Kensington, West London on June 14, 2017, killed 72 people.

Last month a report of the first phase of an inquiry into the tragedy said that there were “systemic failures” in the response of the fire brigade.

Phase two of the inquiry will examine the causes of the inferno and look at the design and modifications on the tower including cladding.

This week David Duckenfield, the police match commander on the day of the 1989 FA Cup semi-final, was cleared of manslaughter following a seven-year, £60million police probe.

The verdict was branded “a disgrace” by relatives of the 96 people who died, and Prof Scraton warned “justice delayed was justice denied”.
