Food-on-the-go giants Greggs is working on vegan versions of all its best selling products following the success of its vegan sausage roll, its chief executive has revealed.
If successful, vegans will soon be able to get their chops around products such as steak bakes , doughnuts and pasties.
The possibility of vegan versions of our lunchtime favourites was revealed by Greggs chief executive Roger Whiteside in a radio interview on the day the company opened its 2,000th store in South Shields.
In an interview with LBC, Greggs chief executive, Roger Whiteside, said: "We are working away to see if we can come up with a version of all our bestselling lines because people want vegan options."
Mr Whiteside said the vegan sausage roll - which helped the Newcastle business record an 11% rise in sales - was part of Greggs’ transformation from a traditional baker to a food-on-the-go specialist that is bucking the national trend of closures on the High Street .
The bakers' vegan sausage roll - a Quorn-filled product - quickly sold out in stores across the UK when it was released earlier this year.
