Greggs' vegan steak bakes hit Kilmarnock and they're flying off the shelf

The most anticipated vegan food to ever be released has finally made its way to Ayrshire.

The vegan steak bake was stocked in Kilmarnock's Greggs store earlier today.

And the meat-free version has been flying off the shelf, according to staff.

Encased in the crisp puff pastry is a rich gravy with Quorn microprotein pieces and onions.

The new additional follows last year's introduction of a vegan sausage roll.

It's also priced at £1.55 – 5p more than the meat version.

What's the verdict?

If you regularly eat a typical steak bake you will probably know the difference between the two.

But for a casual pasty-eater, there's not a lot of difference at all.

The gravy in the vegan version isn't anywhere near as rich as the original – which is not a bad thing.

The onions do pack in flavour and the texture of the Quorn is very pleasant too.

You could happily make the switch to the vegan steak bake and not miss the meat version at all.
