Greggs vegan sausage roll has proved so popular that staff are getting a bonus

Staff at Greggs are getting a whopping bonus this month thanks to the success of the bakery chain's 'iconic' vegan sausage roll.

The company has announced that every member of staff will get a bonus of up to £300 following a "phenomenal year".

Staff who have been with the firm since before the end of March last year, around 19,000 employees will get £300 each, while the remaining 6,000 staff, who started later than that, will be paid £75 per quarter.

Greggs said its underlying pre-tax profit, even with the £7 million payout to staff, will be ahead of expectations when it announces its 2019 results in March.

Announcing the payout, chief executive Roger Whiteside said he was "delighted" to be able to reward to staff, who he says "have worked so hard to deliver this success in what has been a phenomenal year".

The bakery chain launched its vegan sausage roll this time last year, which has helped to push up sales and extend the chain's appeal to a new audience.

The snack, which is now being termed "iconic" by the company, was then followed by the much-anticipated vegan steak bake and a vegan donut.

Greggs has opened 138 new shops, while closing 41, over the year, bringing its total to 2,050 across the UK.

It also has plans to open an additional 100 outlets throughout 2020.
