Greggs to roll out deliveries and click and collect nationwide in next few months

Greggs has confirmed it will make delivery and click and collect options available nationwide in the next few months.

The baker has taken a hit thanks to social distancing measures in shops and fewer people commuting to offices.

Sales are down despite almost all branches being open and so Greggs has decided to get its products to customers' homes instead.

Chief executive Roger Whiteside said: "We have adapted our plans in light of social distancing.

"Digital channels, in the form of 'click and collect' and delivery, which allow customers to order and pay in advance can help us serve additional customers in a safe and effective manner during social distancing.

"We are therefore planning to roll both services out nationwide in the months ahead."

Greggs reopened 800 of its shops for takeaways on June 18, while the rest of its stores began to gradually get back to work from July 2.

But last week Greggs said it only sold around 72% of the pasties, drinks and sandwiches that it did in the same seven days in 2019, despite shops now operating again.

"Whilst customer footfall remains below normal we have adapted our plans to develop later evening trading to focus on those stores offering delivery and 'click and collect'," Whiteside said.

"We have also continued to make good progress with the development of our Greggs Rewards digital app, which will combine multichannel access and our loyalty programme in one place."

Overall, the chain is coping as well as anyone in the sector with the effects of lockdown, however.

"I must give credit to the amazing team of people in our business who have risen to the enormous challenges created by this crisis both in supporting the wider community and working together to redesign our operation to work safely under these new conditions," Whiteside said.

"Adversity has brought out the best in us and we can be proud of our achievements as together we rebuild the business from here."
