Greggs to reopen small number of stores as 'trial' after coronavirus closures

Greggs is planning to reopen a small number of stores as a trail run for reversing the closure of all its UK branches amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In total, 2,050 Greggs branches across the country were temporarily closed a month ago in a bid to protect customers and workers from the deadly virus.

The exact number of branches that will reopen has yet to be announced, or in which locations.

A Greggs spokesperson told The Sun : "We want to play our part in getting the nation back up and running again so we are planning to conduct a limited trial with volunteers to explore how we can reopen our shops with new measures in place that keep our colleagues and customers as safe as we can when we re-open at scale."

It is not clear what type of service the reopened Greggs stores will be able to offer.

Restaurants and cafes are able to offer customers a takeaway service under Government rules.

However some companies  - such as McDonald's, Burger King and KFC - made the decision to close stores completely in order to apply with social distancing measures.

Some chains have now decided they can begin to offer services again - with stricter measures in place - from a small number of outlets.
