Greggs to reopen 800 shops across UK from June

Greggs is set to reopen 800 stores across the UK in June after a successful trial in England earlier this month.

The bakery chain said a pilot project in Tyneside, Newcastle, had "progressed well", allowing the chain to step up efforts to help get the high street back in business.

A Greggs spokeswoman told the Mirror: "We have planned and delivered robust shop trials using our new operational safety measures and they have progressed well, allowing us to now move to open an increased number of our shops from mid-June."

Greggs have been reached to confirm whether branches will soon be reopening in Glasgow.

The firm shut all its 2050 stores on March 24 after the lockdown came into force following a sharp rise in virus cases.

But earlier this month, bosses revealed it was trialling a limited menu to walk-in customers in Newcastle and the north-east of England.

It came after the chain pulled initial plans to reopen 20 locations on May 4 over fears of overcrowding outside store.

In stores, a number of safety measures have been put in place to protect staff and customers while the breakfast menu has been scrapped.

All workers will have their temperatures checked on arrival at work, with perspex screens fitted in key locations, including in kitchens.

The news comes hot on the heels of the news Greggs has submitted plans to open their first drive-thru branch in the city, off Great Western Retail Park in Drumchapel.
