Greggs takes legal action against Gosforth pub over 'Dirty Thoughts of Cheryl Cole' burger

A pub has been told to stop using the name Greggs with its 'Dirty Thoughts of Cheryl Cole' burger because it has caused offence.

The Brandling Villa in South Gosforth serves up the burger with a Greggs sausage roll, two homemade patties, baked beans and cheddar cheese.

But the North East bakery firm has taken legal action against the pub for the £12.50 meal, saying people have complained that it is offensive.

The Brandling Villa told punters on Twitter that it wouldn't be able to serve 'The Dirty Thoughts of Cheryl Cole' burger (Twitter)

The pub, on Haddricks Mill Road, has been ordered to stop using the Greggs name because it is a breach of its trademark - but can still use the sausage rolls.

A spokesman for the pub, which has previously named burgers after Ant and Dec , told The Sun: “We’re a bit gutted about it really.

“We’ve been doing it for years and it’s no harm to their brand - we’re only a couple of pubs.

"It’s a Greggs sausage roll on a burger.

“They want us to remove the name from the menus so it doesn’t say Greggs, but it’s the institutional Newcastle reference that makes the joke.

“We think it’s a shame. I mean, Cheryl's not bothered.”

A spokesperson for Greggs, said: "We’re passionate about our food and our customers, and as the quirky menu descriptions are causing offence, we can't put our name to it.

"We're not asking for the burger to be taken off the menu, we just want to make sure when people are buying a Greggs branded product it’s from us or one of our official partners where permission has been sought."
