Greggs stockpiles sausage roll pork ahead of potential no-deal Brexit

Greggs is bracing itself for a no-deal Brexit by stockpiling pork for its sausage rolls.

With Britain's scheduled departure from the EU less than a month away, the High street bakery chain is making preparations to ensure its products are not affected.

In its third quarterly review of the year, the firm said: "We are preparing for the potential impact of the UK's departure from the European Union by building stocks of key ingredients."

The sausage roll is a huge part of the Greggs brand, with two million units flying out of the warm pastry counter every week.

Although an exhaustive list of products to be stockpiled was not offered, a company spokesperson told the Mirror Online that preparations had not begun to build up a reserve of Quorn - the filling in Gregg's well regarded vegan sausage roll.

The company has previously said that a no-deal Brexit may force it to find alternatives for fresh lettuce and tomatoes.

Greggs recorded a strong year of sales in the report.

In the 13 weeks up to September 28, 2019, sales were up 12.4%, with 56 new shops opening.

The past year also saw the 2,000th Greggs open - a milestone bestowed on an outlet at South Shields Interchange.

Brexit could disrupt the firm's performance over the next few months however.

As well as stockpiling key ingredients, the company is looking at bringing in some new lorries to make sure its supply chain functions smoothly.

Shares fell by 6% when it was announced that there would be fewer shop openings by the end of the year than previously forecast.
