Greggs staff to each get £300 bonus after 'exceptional year' which saw launch of vegan items

Greggs staff will each be given a £300 bonus as a "special thank you" after a successful year for the chain.

In the last 12 months they have seen an increase in store visits, from both "new and existing" customers, while sales jumped by 13 per cent.

This comes following the launch of items such as the vegan-friendly sausage roll, vegan steak bake and vegan doughnut.

Around 19,000 employees, who work across more than 2000 outlets across the UK, will benefit from the bonus – sharing out a total sum of £7million. All staff who have been with the chain since before 31 March last year will get the full £300, and each of the remaining 6000 staff will get £75 per quarter they've worked.

As reported by the Mirror, chief executive Roger Whiteside said they had delivered a "strong finish" to an "exceptional year".

He added: "The major investments we have made in recent years to make Greggs an attractive choice in the food-on-the-go market are delivering.

"Consumers are responding very positively and we have seen increasing visits from both new and existing customers.

"Our record financial performance in 2019 has enabled us to enhance returns to shareholders.

"I am delighted to announce that we will also be making a special additional payment to all of our colleagues across the business who have worked so hard to deliver this success in what has been a phenomenal year."
