Greggs reveal the big reason why they don't keep their sausage rolls hot

Whether it's a vegan one or a standard one, a Greggs sausage roll is a go-to snack for many people, but there's a question the famous bakers regularly get asked by customers.

And that is 'why was my sausage roll cold?' A glance at tweets to and from Greggs Twitter account and you'll see it's a query raised by plenty of people who've bought one.

Some expectant customers have taken to social media to vent their disappointment, with one complaining "Nothing upsets me more than being sold a cold sausage roll. Grow up greggs," another ranting "just got a sausage roll oota the greggs in barhead n the thing was that cold it gave is a f****** brain freeze," and another posting "Absolutely nothing worse than buying a Greggs sausage roll and it being stone cold ."

Let's be honest, a Greggs sausage roll is a treat whether it's hot or cold, but Greggs fans have raised a valid question.

And Greggs have answered it, citing one big reason why.

A statement from the legendary Newcastle firm reads "We sell savouries which are freshly baked in our shop ovens then put on the shelf to cool.

"We don’t keep our savouries in a heated environment, or use heat retaining packaging, or market them as hot, as they are simply freshly baked throughout the day then left to cool.

"As bakers we believe that baking our savouries fresh each day gives customers the best quality savoury.

"If the sausage rolls and pasties were kept hot after they had been baked, then they would be subject to VAT and the customer would have to be charged a higher price, in the same way that we charge VAT on our hot sandwiches which are kept in a heated cabinet and are subject to VAT."

And a number of Greggs customers on Twitter have said they've been told by staff serving them that their sausage roll was cold before buying.
