Greggs is slashing prices on hot drinks and food due to VAT cut

Missed Greggs during the lockdown?

Thankfully it's now back up and running again and from this Saturday, you can get your fix for less.

The high street bakery chain has announced it will be slashing prices of food and hot drinks thanks to the VAT tax cut, which came into force yesterday (June 15th).

The tax has been reduced from 20% to 5% to help give struggling hotels, pubs, coffee shops, restaurants and attractions a boost following the coronavirus crisis.

Greggs said the VAT cut will take effect in its stores up and down the UK from Saturday July 18.

While most of its products are already subject to a zero tax rate, hot drinks and hot breakfast items will be slashed in price.

The bakery chain will be selling sausage rolls and pasties at cheaper prices - but only when they are ordered for home delivery.

If you order any hot drinks for takeaway from Saturday, these will be cheaper as a result of the VAT cut.

The cost of meal deals will remain the same after the reductions.

A Greggs spokesman said: "The vast majority of our products are zero-rated for VAT but on those individual lines which are subject to the standard rate we intend to pass the full reduction benefit directly onto our customers."

The sausage rolls and pasties sold at Greggs stores are not kept warm, meaning they are all VAT-free.

As the Greggs' sausage rolls and pasties ordered for delivery are kept heated, this means it pays VAT on them.

Most sweet treats at Greggs will remain the same in price as they are zero VAT rated anyway.

More than 1,000 Greggs branches are now operating again, following the successful reopening of 800 shops in mid-June.

The shops are open for takeaway only, with seating areas and customer toilets closed.
