Greggs in dispute with pub over sausage roll in ‘offensive’ Cheryl Cole burger

Greggs the baker has taken legal action against a pub over its 'Dirty Thoughts of Cheryl Cole' burger because it offended some custonmers.

The Brandling Villa in Newcastle serves up the burger with a Greggs sausage roll as well as two homemade patties, baked beans and cheddar cheese.

But the North East bakery firm has taken legal action against the pub for the £12.50 meal, saying people have complained that it is offensive.

Now the pub, on Haddricks Mill Road, has been ordered to stop using the Greggs name because it is a breach of its trademark - but can still use the sausage rolls, reports ChronicleLive .

A spokesman for the pub, which has previously named burgers after Ant and Dec, said: “We’re a bit gutted about it really.

“We’ve been doing it for years and it’s no harm to their brand - we’re only a couple of pubs.

"It’s a Greggs sausage roll on a burger.

“They want us to remove the name from the menus so it doesn’t say Greggs, but it’s the institutional Newcastle reference that makes the joke.

“We think it’s a shame. I mean, Cheryl's not bothered.”

A spokesperson for Greggs, said: "We’re passionate about our food and our customers, and as the quirky menu descriptions are causing offence, we can't put our name to it.

"We're not asking for the burger to be taken off the menu, we just want to make sure when people are buying a Greggs branded product it’s from us or one of our official partners where permission has been sought."
