Greggs has just launched its festive menu for 2019 and we've tried it

With Halloween and Bonfire Night already a distant memory, Christmas is fully in our sights.

And as the countdown begins, one of the seasonal highlights has arrived - the Greggs festive menu.

From Thursday, November 7 , the savoury and sweet snacks are available at stores throughout the UK - although Greggs fans in Cardiff were lucky enough to get their hands on the famous Festive Bakes three days earlier than the rest of the country.

From old favourites like the Festive Bake to the new vegan-friendly mince pies, there's plenty to choose from - but what's the must-buy treat for Christmas 2019?   We gave the items on the festive menu a try...

The savouries

Festive Bake - £1.55

Just like turkey, tinsel and Terry's Chocolate Orange, the Greggs Festive Bake IS Christmas.

For those who haven't tried one yet - where have you been? - the golden pastry square is filled with chicken, sage and onion stuffing and bacon in a creamy sage and cranberry sauce.

It's a real festive delight and fans will be thrilled to know it hasn't been tinkered with for 2019 so it's just as good as you'll remember.

Pigs under Blankets Baguette - £3

Pigs under blankets baguette (WalesOnline/Rob Browne)

Pigs under blankets - in a baguette? Last year I loved this addition to the menu and while it's making a return for 2019, sadly the one I tried was not up to the same standard.

The baguette itself was very dry and the bacon could have been crispier but the rest of the filling - sausages, sage and onion stuffing and a splash of cranberry and port sauce - was spot-on.

Pigs under Blankets tub - £2.25

Hot on the heels of its debut last year - the pigs under blankets are back.

With the hype from 12 months ago still ringing in my ears, I am happy to report that they are just as delicious and are a taste sensation.

Christmas Lunch Soup - £1.90

The Christmas lunch soup is a very enjoyable addition to the festive menu.

The soup's appearance is of a thick vegetable broth.

Once you delve into it you get chicken, turkey, sage and onion stuffing, pork sausage, bacon, vegetables and herbs and spices.

A very filling menu item.

Christmas Lunch Sandwich - £2.75

Christmas sandwich (WalesOnline/Rob Browne)

The Christmas Lunch sandwich contains delicious sliced turkey breast with pork, sage and onion stuffing, sweetcure bacon, fresh salad leaves with a cranberry and port sauce and mayonnaise on malted bread.

In my book, you can't really call it a Christmas lunch without the sprouts but this is still a winner.

Festive hot drinks

Mint Mocha - £2.20

If you are looking for a comforting, warm drink then the Mint Mocha is for you.

It comes with whipped cream and sprinkles too for no extra cost - although I wasn't asked if I would like cream on any of the festive hot drinks.

Salted Caramel Latte- £2.20

This was a strange one as the taste did not hit the spot for me.

Enjoyable enough but not one I will be ordering when I return for my next Festive Bake.

Vanilla Latte - £2.20

The warm aroma of vanilla in a latte to some is their idea of heaven.

And for me it is a nice sweet addition to the already heaving list of items at Greggs that I love.

Again it would have been perfect if I was offered the cream topping but the drink alone is a winner.

Sweet treats

Sweet Mince Pies x 6 - £1.75

Festive mince pies (WalesOnline/Rob Browne)

This year Greggs has hit the jackpot with their sweet mince pies.

With crumbly shortcrust pastry, filled with sweet mince 'meat' made from vine fruits, bramley apple and candied orange and lemon peel, the vegan-friendly pie is one of the best I've ever tasted.
