Greggs forced to close distribution depot in Leeds after coronavirus outbreak

Greggs has been forced to close its distribution depot in Leeds after an outbreak of coronavirus.

The bakery chain closed the site after a number of its staff recently tested positive for Covid-19, with more cases discovered when further testing was carried out.

Lucy Jackson, deputy director of public health at Leeds City Council, said the outbreak highlights why further testing and contact tracing was important, which she said Greggs was "proactively undertaking".

She added: "The safety of Greggs staff, customers and the wider community remains our priority and we are working closely with Greggs and Public Health England to make sure any infection is contained."

The distribution depot is located on Elmfield Way, Bramley, and Public Health England have been working closely together with Greggs to ensure the safe management of the outbreak.

Roger Whiteside, CEO at Greggs said: "Following a number of our staff testing positive for COVID-19 at our Leeds distribution depot, we have taken immediate action to implement our Covid response plan and we are working closely with Leeds City Council and Public Health England to ensure that we minimise any possible impact on our customers and the wider community in Leeds and the surrounding area."
