Greggs will release new vegan product in January 2020 after sausage roll success

Greggs has indicated it will be adding to its vegan range in January.

The bakers has dropped a huge hint that it will release more meat-free takes on its classic pasties and pies a year after it unveiled the smash hit vegan sausage roll.

Greggs has been fairly quiet on which of its big-sellers will be getting the vegan treatment, although in the summer its chief executive, Roger Whiteside, said the Newcastle-based chain is working on vegan versions of all its products. Roger himself has unveiled he is a vegan and avoids meat and dairy products, even at Greggs.

Rumours then circulated in November, claiming Greggs would release a vegan steak bake by Christmas. Greggs told ChronicleLive last month that it had no updates .

But today, Greggs looks like it has confirmed it will be expanding its vegan range in January 2020.

Greggs tweeted a video, parodying fashion label collaboration 'drops'. In the eight second 'believe the hype' clip, Greggs says the Greggs X Vegan will 'drop' - meaning it will be released - in January 2020.

In the tweet, Greggs said: "This isn't flake news..."

Greggs launched the vegan sausage roll in January 2019. After a brief trial, the Quorn-based vegan sausage roll - developed by Greggs in Newcastle over two years - was rolled out nationally, helping Greggs achieve an 11.1% sales spike

In the summer, Greggs released a vegan Mexican bean wrap.

Speaking in August, chief executive Mr Whiteside said: "We’re working away to see if we can come up with a vegan version of all our top-selling lines because people want a vegan option. That’s what’s been shown by the vegan sausage roll."

The food-on-the-go retailer is certainly keeping details of its new vegan offering strictly under wraps, simply confirming: "The rumours are true. We can’t wait to reveal more about the launch and how we will be adding to our vegan menu."
