Greggs confirms it will reopen 800 shops to takeaway customers on Thursday

Greggs has confirmed it will reopen 800 shops to takeaway customers on Thursday.

As part of its phased reopening plan, Greggs said in a previous update that it hoped a larger scale opening of selected shops could happen by mid-June.

In a report on the opening, Greggs said: "In line with this plan we intend to re-open around 800 shops to takeaway customers later this week, on Thursday 18 June.

"All team members are being trained in the range of operational changes and protective measures that we have implemented across our retail estate, including".

The announcement confirms an earlier Mirror exclusive in which it was revealed June 18th had been marked as a proposed reopening date.

They also confirmed social distancing measures will be in place with the help of floor markings, protective screens, PPE for staff and hand sanitiser.

Customers will also be encouraged to use contactless payments cards instead of cash.

The company added that any customer rewards that are due to expire will now run until December 2020.

Greggs closed all its 2,050 stores on March 24 after the country was forced into lockdown following a sudden rise in coronavirus cases.

Greggs warned sales are likely to remain subdued as the chain copes with fewer customers allowed in stores at any one time, following a series of small-scale trials near its offices.

As a result of the expected fall in sales, an unspecified proportion of staff "will remain furloughed until sales levels begin returning to normal", the company said.

The Newcastle-based business has taken a tentative approach to reopening, with management keen to avoid any rushes or overcrowding at sites following its three-month closure.

Rivals KFC and McDonald's have seen long car queues for drive-thru services and non-essential retailers were greeted with hundreds of shoppers waiting to snap up a bargain, as stores were able to reopen their doors on Monday.

Greggs had been allowed to stay open throughout the lockdown, offering takeaway and delivery services.

But bosses declined, saying it felt remaining open would compromise the safety of its employees.
