Greggs closed amid coronavirus fears after staff member returned from lockdown area in Italy

A North Somerset bakery was forced to close temporarily after a member of staff returned to work after travelling to the UK from Italy.

The Greggs branch in Colliers Walk, Nailsea, was closed for around an hour today (Monday, March 9).

Bristol Live understands a member of staff had returned to work after a holiday in Venice, although Greggs has refused to provide an official statement.

It is understood local people, concerned at hearing the staff member had returned from an area currently under ‘lockdown’ due to coronavirus, had contacted Greggs head office to enquire about the situation.

Initially the male member of staff had returned to work after following earlier Public Health Guidelines on coronavirus.

It is understood he was not feeling unwell and was not displaying any symptoms of the virus.

However the guidelines from Public Health England and the Department of Health and Care have since been updated.

Guidelines now advise anyone who has travelled back from a lockdown zone in Italy - which now includes Venice - should self isolate and call the NHS on 111, even if they do not have symptoms.

It is understood the store was closed for clarification following the concerns raised.

The man is now in self quarantine.

The news has left some concerned, with one person posting on Facebook to say: "I cant believe this.

"Lets hope they didn't sell any food by time it was shut down [sic]."

The store operates as a takeaway but also had an eat-in section and is hugely popular.

Greggs has confirmed the member of staff is now self quarantining following the update in the Government advice.

The bakery chain would not be drawn on whether a deep clean of the store had taken place but added Greggs had very robust hygiene measures in place at its shops.

The store is now open and operating as normal.
