Greggs CEO issues statement amid coronavirus outbreak

Greggs has remained defiant amid the coronavirus outbreak, saying it aims to keep its shops open.

The popular bakery chain says it is taking precautionary measures, Manchester Evening News reports.

Roger Whiteside, the firm's CEO, stressed the wellbeing of Greggs' customers and staff is "extremely important" and they are following hygiene guidance.

He said: "We pride ourselves on high standards of hygiene and cleanliness across the business, and have taken every opportunity to remind our teams to follow the robust procedures that are already in place.

"We have also taken further precautionary measures including more frequent cleaning and sanitising of all shop surfaces and equipment, and for the time being, will no longer serve hot drinks in reusable cups.

"We aim to keep all our food supplies and shops open.

"If conditions determine that a shop must be closed we will provide notices directing customers to the nearest alternative, and ensure our online shop locator is updated to show latest information.

"Events are moving very quickly and so we will continue to monitor the situation closely, reviewing developments and the latest government advice to consider how this impacts our processes and the decisions we take.

"We will update you on any additional changes as soon as we can through our website and on our in-shop notices."
