Greggs boss says he won't pay staff stuck in quarantine after travelling abroad

The CEO of Greggs has said the chain will not pay staff forced into coronavirus quarantine after returning from non-essential holidays or international travel.

He said the company had been "explicit" with staff about the risks of international travel even as restrictions are lifted.

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon warned Scots that they should not expect safe travel rules not to change between them leaving and returning from international travel.

The First Minister said even if she was asked, and had the time to take a holiday, she would still not risk travelling abroad at the moment.

Greggs CEO Roger Whiteside said his company had been "very fair" during the pandemic; but added they would not pay staff who were forced into quarantine after returning from Spain following quarantine being reimposed.

The Scottish and UK Govenrments both reimposed a 14-day self-isolation period for people arriving into the country from Spain over the weekend.

The move left many surprised after they travelled following Spain's addition to the "safe travel" list.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Roger Whiteside said: “We’ve really tried to be very fair about how to handle this crisis. We topped the furlough pay from 80 percent to 100 percent during the lockdown phase, because we thought that was the fair thing to do.

“And then when news came out that people could start to think about going away on holiday, we thought about that, but we made it clear to people ‘look there is a risk clearly that quarantine might apply, so if you do decide you have to take that risk for yourself.

“You can’t expect the company to pay for your quarantine if you’ve chosen to take the risk that you’d go abroad and then find that you’ve then got to quarantine when you get back.

“So we won’t be paying for that quarantine.”

“We communicated through our portal to our employees to explain. As things change we keep updating the policy obviously."

Edinburgh Live reported earlier how an employment lawyer had said that employers could ask staff to cancel their holidays.

The legal expert told LBC radio that the law was balanced in the favour of employees who could insist staff avoid travel over the risk of the extra time off required to quarantine.
