Greggs boss promises more vegan goods are on the way

The new vegan sausage roll from Greggs

More vegan products are in the offing from Greggs as the bakeries chain looks to expand the range beyond sausage rolls, boss Roger Whiteside said on Tuesday.

Whiteside outlined the investment plans as Greggs posted a 15% sales jump to £546 million in the six months to June 29.

Same-store sales rose 10.5% thanks to the popularity of the vegan sausage rolls, launched in January.

The chief executive told the Evening Standard: “Many customers are demanding more non-meat products and we want to offer more choices. It took us a couple of years to perfect our vegan sausage rolls, and I can now reveal our staff are working hard in our testing kitchens to make new meat and dairy-free products suitable for vegans.”

He added: “The range will get wider in the future.”

The retailer is also looking at extending opening hours to 9pm at some stores, as most typically close at 6pm.

Greggs declared a special dividend of 35p per share.
