Greggs announces new coronavirus measures for customers and offers free drinks to NHS staff

Greggs has announced extra measures in its bakeries amid the Covid-19 crisis.

The high-street bakery has said its shops will remain trading for as long as it's able to keep them open but to protect staff and customers it will close all of its seating areas and offer a takeaway service instead.

Greggs has also closed its customer toilets, removed condiments and closed its water refill stations, as well as refusing reusable cups.

For now the opening times remain the same throughout the 133 Greggs across Wales but that could be subject to change.

In a statement on its website, CEO Roger Whiteside said: "We'll continue to monitor the situation closely, reviewing developments and the latest advice, and inform you of any additional steps we need to take.

UK hospitality industry: Millions of jobs could be lost

"We’ll keep as many of our shops open for as long as possible, but you may see a change in our opening hours and range as we respond to this ever-changing landscape. "

Greggs has also announced that it will offer all emergency service personnel and health and social care workers free hot drinks on presentation of their work pass.

Greggs said: "They are doing an amazing job, and this is the least we can do to support them."

The bakery has also pledged to continue to help the Greggs Foundation donate unsold food to good causes and deliver the programmes that support those in need.

And they're not the only ones trying to help out the community.

Here's a list of the food outlets also doing their bit.

McDonald's - the fast-food chain is offering free hot drinks to emergency services, health and social care workers.

Pret - the sandwich shop is giving NHS workers hot drinks on the house and offering them 50% off everything else.

Dominos - the pizza restaurant is giving away free pizza to all NHS workers this Friday.
