Greggs and Costa hit with food shortages as some items 'temporarily unavailable'

Greggs and Costa Coffee are the latest shops to join the growing list of chains to be hit with supply issues.

McDonald’s has said its run out of milkshakes in some of its restaurants, while KFC has been forced to take some items off the menu due to a lack of stock last week - as Mirror Online report.

Customers of the popular bakery chain Greggs have now complained that shops have ran out of chicken bakes - with one person tweeting a sign from inside a store which apologised to customers if they did not have their 'favourite sandwich.'

A spokesperson from Greggs has confirmed that the chain is experiencing some supply issues - which means some items are temporarily unavailable.

The statement said: "Unfortunately, like others , we’re seeing temporary interruptions in supply for some ingredients which occasionally results in shops not being able to maintain full availability on all lines.

"However, we have a wide range of choices in our menu for customers happy to buy an alternative."

Greggs couldn't confirm exactly what products are being affected when asked by The Mirror - but the spokesperson denied they were having any specific supply issues with chicken bakes.

Costa is also offering a reduced menu with customers saying some stores have run out of decaffeinated coffee.

The high street coffee chain tweeted : "We are facing some supply chain issues just now. We're working hard to resolve this ASAP."

A Costa spokesperson added: “Like many other businesses, we are currently experiencing some stock shortages and as a result some items may be temporarily unavailable.

“We apologise for any disappointment or inconvenience caused to our customers.”

While none of the chains affected have specifically confirmed what the problems are, retailers across the UK have been grappling with a shortfall of around 100,000 HGV drivers.

The lack of drivers was an issue before Covid-19 but experts say the shortfall has been made worse due to the pandemic and a backlog of driver tests.

Brexit and post-EU rules have also been linked to the issues. About 14,000 European lorry drivers left the UK last year and only 600 have returned, statistics suggest.

All major supermarkets - including Big Four supermarkets Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Asda - have seen shelves left empty in recent weeks.

Aldi and Lidl also responded to complaints from customers last month.

The update from Greggs comes as the boss of supermarket chain Co-op warned how food shortages are at the worst level he’s ever seen.

Meanwhile, the managing director of Iceland has said he fears supply chain issues could “cancel” Christmas this year.
