Gregg Williams wanted C.J. Mosley because of Nick Saban

Coaching players from Alabama is easy, according to Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, because they’re used to a vocal and fiery style of coaching.

That’s part of the reason Williams coveted linebacker C.J. Mosley during free agency. Mosley’s skill in the middle of the defense was obvious, but his coachability was another appealing attribute.

“I really wanted him,” Williams said of Mosley earlier this week. “One of the guys that he played for is a very good friend of mine, Nick Saban, so I understand the whole philosophy of what he’s gone through. He’s had his ass chewed before, so I don’t have to worry about that because that’s how Nick is.”

Saban’s calling card as a coach is his ability to get the absolute most out of players. His style may appear abrasive in practice – similar to Williams’ – but Saban’s record in college speaks for itself, as does the quality of NFL players to come out of Alabama.

The Jets drafted another Saban product in this year’s draft, No. 3 overall pick Quinnen Williams. Saban has had nothing but positive things to say about Williams, who he believes is a “perfect” fit in today’s NFL. Williams is another great example of Saban getting the most out of his players, as Williams was a backup nose tackle for two seasons before working his way into the starting role.

With two Alabama players on his defense, Gregg Williams has to be overjoyed with the type of team he’ll be able to coach. Mosley specifically excites Williams because of his natural leadership ability. That’s a big reason why the Jets signed him to a huge five-year, $85 million contract this offseason.

“He’s a really good leader, and he leads by example first,” Williams said. “All the great leaders that I’ve ever been a part of have to show great example before you open your mouth, so he’s always doing that. He’s always done that. He’s not an extremely highly vocal guy, but he sets the example by how he goes about doing his job, and he understands the routine of being a pro, being a real pro.”
