Gregg Williams fires back at Odell Beckham Jr.’s accusations of dirty play

New York Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams wanted to hear nothing about Odell Beckham Jr.’s comments that Williams promotes dirty play and cheap shots. The former Browns defensive coordinator/interim head coach fired back at Beckham’s assertions in a terse press briefing.

Beckham accused Williams, who was suspended from the NFL for the entire 2012 season for his role as the leader of the Bountygate scandal with the New Orleans Saints, of actively instructing his players to try to injure opponents. That includes Beckham himself; when the Giants and Williams’ Browns played in the 2017 preseason, Browns defensive back Briean Boddy-Calhoun submarined Beckham after a reception and caused a high ankle sprain.

“We don’t do that. I’ve never done that anywhere I’ve been,” said Williams. “We don’t do anything to hurt the team. It’s the No. 1 primary thing. You’re committing penalties, you’re doing those type of stuff, we just don’t do it.”

Williams then blamed the media for encouraging Beckham’s remarks.

“And you guys (the media) are cooperating, giving (Beckham) attention,” Williams said. “Just don’t give him attention.”

The Browns wideout has been dealing with a lingering hip issue all summer, though he did look just fine in the Week 1 loss to the Titans. It will be interesting to see if anything comes up during Monday night’s game in New York.
