'Gregarious' caterpillars living next to a Stockport business park have created quite a spectacle

This incredible spectacle can be seen outside a business park in Stockport.

The webbing is currently covering a hedgerow at the Cheadle Royal business park, in Stockport.

Experts say it’s the work of moth caterpillars, which have created the structure as a safe space from predators.

The pictures were snapped by Emma Dean and shared with the M.E.N. on Friday morning.

Zoe Randle, senior surveys officer at Butterfly Conservation, says the images show moth caterpillar webs.

“They’re incredible - they look like Christmas decorations,” she told the M.E.N.

“There are three species that produce webs like this and the reason they do it is because they live gregarious in large numbers to protect themselves from predators, such as birds.”

Zoe says the moths in the hedgerow could be one of three species; orchard ermine, spindle ermine or bird cherry ermine.

“Without knowing the plant I couldn’t tell you which one it is,” she said.

“It’s quite common to see this at this time of year.

“The webs can be seen from May to June as they keep the caterpillars safe from predators until they are ready to pupate.

“It’s quite a wonder to behold.”

Zoe says the sight is common across the U.K at this time of year but is often mistaken for spider webs, or something else.

“There was a tree down in Oxfordshire that was covered in this web and the tree was cut down,” she says.

“It won’t harm the hedges of the foliage.

“The best thing is just to leave them alone. Moths don’t cause any harm and are a vital part of the food chain.

“They are a really important source of food for bats and birds especially. And they’re an indicator of population decline among other species too.

“There’s a new body of evidence that shows they are really good pollinators too.”
