Greg Tansey reveals St Mirren exit came after club wanted him to pay for own operation

Greg Tansey insists he had to leave St Mirren because the club wanted him to pay for his own operation.

The Paisley club announced earlier today that they had come to a mutual agreement with the former Aberdeen midfielder to terminate his contract.

And the 30-year-old has taken to Twitter to reveal why he felt he had to leave the Buddies as he continues to battle with a hernia problem.

In a frank and honest post, he said: "Just to put the rumours to rest, a recurrence of the injury that I've struggled with for the last 2 years after an operation to correct a simple hernia made it worse.

"Unfortunately the injury flared up again. It was found that I needed further surgery to rectify it.

"After many discussions with St Mirren it was clear that I would have to pay for the operation myself.

"After that I felt my position was untenable."

Tansey, who is now looking for a new club as the Scottish Premiership is fully underway, also paid tribute to the St Mirren fans.

He added: "I'd like to thank all the well wishes from St Mirren fans and wish the club all the best in the future."
