Greg Stewart holds Rangers signing talks as Ibrox switch edges closer

Rangers have stepped up their bid to land impending free agent Greg Stewart and look set to agree a deal after holding talks in the last 24 hours.

The Light Blues escalated their interest in the Birmingham attacker after pulling out of a potential move for Motherwell winger Jake Hastie.

They had wanted to land the Scotland U21 star but were no longer prepared to play a waiting game with Derby, Middlesbrough, Hull, Millwall and Portsmouth also keen.

Rangers' director of football Mark Allen has now turned his focus to Stewart, who is currently on-loan at Aberdeen.

MailSport exclusively revealed the Ibrox side were in for the versatile attacker who can play on the wing or through the middle.

The 29-year-old, one of the players of the season in the first half of the campaign, has seen his form dip after he left Kilmarnock and returned to Pittodrie for a second loan spell.

But Dons boss Derek McInnes – who has offered Stewart a four-year contract – has confirmed Stewart has been struggling with a hip problem.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard already secured Kilmarnock winger Jordan Jones on a pre-contract deal and will join the Ibrox side in the summer.
