Greg Stewart a target for Rangers as Steven Gerrard eyes free transfer

Rangers are weighing up a summer move for Aberdeen’s on-loan striker Greg Stewart.

MailSport understands the Ibrox club will attempt to snap up the 29-year-old on a free transfer when his contract expires at Birmingham City.

Stewart signed for the Blues in 2016 but has been loaned back to Killmarnock and Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership.

He scored eight goals in the first half of this campaign at Rugby Park - including an equaliser at Ibrox - before controversially joining the Dons in January.

Steven Gerrard warns Rangers board to back him with serious cash

Rangers gaffer Steven Gerrard is an admirer of Stewart, who can play anywhere across the front line.

And having already snared Jordan Jones from Killie on a Bosman, he now wants Stewart for next term in a bid to add creativity in the final third.

His deal at St Andrews is up on June 30 and Stewart won’t be short of options, particularly north of the border.

But Rangers now look favourites to land the former Dundee attacker as Gerrard reloads his squad for a fresh crack at the Premiership title.

He’d also like Motherwell hitkid Jake Hastie, who has been offered a deal by the Ibrox club.

But the 20-year-old’s future is still uncertain as he weighs up his options, with English Championship outfit Brentford also believed to be keen on his signature.
