A DECADE after launching his weekly cartoon strip, Greg Moodie has announced a fundraiser to ensure the comic’s next 10 years.
The satirist is already £2000 towards his £5000 goal on Indiegogo less than a week after it went live.
The former National cartoonist said funds from 10 Years of the Strip will be used to provide him with a basic wage for a few months, while covering production, delivery and raw material costs.
Those who donate more than £20 will be sent a 20-page newspaper of the highlights from Moodie’s work since he started in 2012, along with access to all of his weekly cartoons.
Those who give more can look forward to a hand-crafted portrait of Sean Connery, each made to order.
Moodie said he is determined to continue the weekly strip.
“I’ve been doing this now every week for 10 years,” he told The National. “I’ve never missed a week. But since 2020 I’ve had to find other ways of funding it.
“So now I’ve gone straight to the people who are actually going to read the stuff.
“I am committed to doing a weekly strip. When I started out doing this, there were a lot of people doing satire, but after the referendum campaign most of them tailed off.
“But I was just determined that I was not going to give up because I've always felt that independence is just around the corner. I've never felt that this is not gonna happen.”
Moodie said he wanted to continue satirising Westminster as the cartoonist’s “gift” that is Liz Truss looks set to take the keys to No 10.
He said: “Right now I really do not want to be stopping satirising these people because they're a gift.
“There's nobody else doing what I do. This is a most unusual thing now.”
Moodie said those who contribute are helping to keep pro-independence publishing alive, which he has continued to do even without funding.
“The idea of this thing is to give me a bit of funding in order to just make it a bit less painful," he said.
“It’s very painful doing something like this without any funding whatsoever. And when people are gonna actually vote with their cash it really makes it worthwhile.
“You're helping to keep Scottish satire, which in itself is quite unusual, you're keeping that alive.
“You're keeping alive the debate about Scottish independence with our takes - these are specifically Scottish takes on being governed by Westminster.
“So these things, if you value them at all then it's worth it's worth contributing.”
