Greg Kiltie says Killie connections are helping him settle in at St Mirren

Greg Kiltie insists St Mirren need to learn from their disappointing first defeat of the league season against Hearts in Paisley.

Saints went down 2-1 to Hearts as goals from Andy Halliday and Liam Boyce were enough to send the Jambos top before Joe Shaughnessy gave them hope.

That hope was extinguished a minute later when Kristian Dennis was shown a straight red card for a foul on Peter Haring.

But despite the poor result last Saturday, summer recruit Kiltie explained having some of his former Kilmarnock teammates in the squad has made his transition easier.

Speaking exclusively to Express Sport, he said: “At 2-0 down, it was always going to be tough to come back in 20 minutes.

"When we got the first we thought we could push on. Then the sending off doesn’t help, so that’s another problem for us.

"We just need to take our medicine and move on.

“I’ve really enjoyed it, it’s been really good, up until today, the result wasn’t good.

"But being at the club with the boys and stuff has been excellent, we won’t let today affect us. I’m just delighted to be here and it’s a long season, so we can try and push on and do well.

“Alan Power came with me, Lee Erwin and Eamonn Brophy all played at Killie together with me, so it was easy enough to settle in and the rest of the boys have been brilliant.”

The Buddies are in cup action this weekend as they travel to Livingston in the last-16 of the Premier Sports Cup, in a repeat of last year’s semi final tie which Livi won 1-0.

Although Kiltie wasn’t part of that squad, he's determined to help his new side go one better this time around.

And looking further forward to the return of league business, St Mirren face a trip to Parkhead to take on Celtic on August 21.

It will likely be the first league full house for Ange Postecoglou‘s men, and Kiltie admits it will be nice to play in front of a capacity crowd again. Especially after nearly a 18 months of playing in front of no or very few supporters due to Covid-19 restrictions.

But after not winning either of their opening two league games, the 24-year-old insists that he and his new teammates need to go to Glasgow and try and get more points on the board.

Kiltie continued: “The team did well in the League Cup last year and you always try and improve on the year before.

"We’ll obviously be looking to go through. We want to do better than last year and hopefully we can.

“I think Celtic Park will be full as well, from what I read.

"So, it will be a big game with a big crowd, that we haven’t been used to in a while.

"I’m looking forward to it and we need to go there and start picking up points in the league, we’ll be trying to go there and get something.”
