Greg Docherty Rangers exit latest as Sunderland boss opens up on negotiations

Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson has admitted "initial chats with Rangers" over a deal for Greg Docherty .

The midfielder spent last season on loan at Shrewsbury Town and won their player of the season award, before returning to Steven Gerrard 's squad in the summer.

He's failed to find a place in the Rangers first team though and hasn't made a single Premiership appearance.

Docherty is set to be loaned out this month with Charlton Athletic and Sunderland both interested, and the Wearside club have confirmed they're in negotiations.

Parkinson said: "Greg is one of the players we have looked at and we have had initial chats with Rangers.

"But there is a number of those discussions going on, and we will reconvene on that after Saturday."

Gerrard has confirmed that Docherty could be on the way out this month.

He said: "This is a player we respect really much due to his effort but unfortunately it hasn't happened this season and the best thing for his career is to go and play."
