Greg Bolger not planning on letting Dundalk win the league against Shamrock Rovers

Greg Bolger shifts uncomfortably in his chair when the scene is put to him.

The final whistle blows at Oriel Park next Monday night, sparking a pitch invasion as Lilywhite fans celebrate Dundalk’s title-clinching win over Shamrock Rovers.

“Of course you don't want that, it's not nice,” said the Hoops midfielder, who hopes to sign a contract extension in the coming days.

But if Dundalk win in Waterford tonight, the reigning champions will do just that if they also scalp their closest challengers three days later.

With six league games left, second-placed Rovers trail Dundalk by 10 points going into their home game with St Pat’s tonight.

Bolger knows it would take a remarkable collapse from Vinny Perth’s charges to see late drama unfolding in a staid title race.

“We’ll go up there to give it our all,” he said. “We don't want that feeling of coming off the pitch thinking that we didn't try or were half-hearted.

“With six games to go you just don't know. I'm not saying it's over by any means and stranger things have happened.”

But Bolger knows that a mid-season blip and particularly the three derby defeats to Bohs is where the Hoops came up short.

“There were circumstances in those games and sendings off, penalties and some decisions but they won the games and we are where we are because of it,” he said.

“On the back of Europe, we’ve gone on a good run and played really well. There was a spell in the middle of the season where we had a few injuries and suspensions.

“We brought in a few young lads at the time and we lost a few games in-a-row like Bohs, Dundalk and Sligo.

“You look back on that period and you kick yourself a bit, but that's what happens. All we could have done is come back the way we have.

“But at the same time you want to be winning something and we’ll know more in the next few weeks.”

Shamrock Rovers are away to arch enemies Bohs in a mouthwatering FAI Cup -semi-final a week tonight.

And Bolger reckons the Hoops need to lift the trophy for the first time since 1987 to deem this a successful season.

“If you want to be recognised as a good team you need to win something,” he said.

“You want to be getting trophies and we have ourselves in that position and we'll see how it goes.

“But we’re taking it game by game and we're not looking at Dundalk on Monday or at the Cup semi-final.

“We’re only looking at Pat's tonight because it’s a Dublin derby. We didn’t have a game for the last two weeks so all our preparation has been for Pat’s and nothing else.

“With the weekend that's it in it, we’re looking for six points. It’s a big one tonight and then we’ll roll into Monday but we need to look after ourselves.”
