A man accused of several violent sexual assault cases in Los Angeles, California was shot and killed by FBI agents inside a hotel room in North Carolina this week.
Greg Alyn Carlson, 47, was inducted into the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list in September 2018.
On Wednesday, the authorities found Carlson at a hotel in Apex, North Carolina after a local police officer noticed a car associated with him in the parking lot.
Paul Delacourt, the assistant director of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office, said Carlson was killed after a violent altercation occurred when agents entered his hotel room.
On July 13, 2017, the 47-year-old fugitive was accused of burglary in Los Angeles. He allegedly attempted to sexually assault a woman while using a weapon. The FBI said Carlson had a local arrest warrant based on charges of burglary, assault with intent to commit rape and assault with a deadly weapon.
According to Los Angeles Police Department Captain Billy Hayes, Carlson was linked to at least three assaults, two of them in 2003 based on results from DNA tests.
He was arrested in September 2017, but fled after posting bond. Carlson ran away to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, after being released from custody, the FBI said.
Carlson also fled South Carolina with a stolen firearm, a rental vehicle, and cash. He also led the local police on an “erratic, high-speed chase” in Alabama. In November 2017, the fugitive was also spotted in two Florida cities.
In December 2017, a federal warrant was issued for Carlson, charging him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
He was described as a “woman’s worst nightmare,” by FBI Special Agent Scott Garriola, who served on the bureau’s Los Angeles Fugitive Task Force, in a statement last year.
“He is the prowler who breaks in at night and violently sexually assaults his victims,” Mr Garriola said.
Before his death, Carlson was described “armed and dangerous.” There was also a $100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
