Greenwich fire: Huge blaze breaks out near 02 Arena

Over 100 firefighters are tackling a large blaze near the O2 arena in Greenwich, London.

Images of the fire showed thick black smoke billowing into the sky above the capital.

Fire crews were called to Tunnel Avenue around midday, with the fire affecting a recycling yard, some industrial units and a pub.

The area has been cordoned off because gas cylinders in the vicinity of the fire.

Pictures of flames raging behind the Ibiza-style nightclub Studio 338 have also been widely posted.

Station manager Winston Douglas said: "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a man who has been taken to hospital by ambulance.

"This is a large fire and the smoke could be seen from across London, meaning we received a large number of emergency calls.

"Firefighters will be at the scene for the rest of the day, and possibly into the evening."

Transport for London has also tweeted to say Millennium Way and Boord Street have been closed because of "possible smoke across the carriageway".

London Fire Brigade received over 50 emergency calls about the fire, with the first coming in around 11.43am.

Fiften fire engines from several London fire stations arrived to battle the blaze.

Crews from East Greenwich, Greenwich, Plumstead, Eltham, Deptford, Lewisham, Poplar, Whitechapel and Bethnal Green are currently in attendance.

London Ambulance Service said it was called to the scene at 11.58am, and sent a single responder in a car, an ambulance crew, the hazardous area response team, two incident response officers and the air ambulance.

A spokeswoman added: "We treated one patient at the scene for burns. They were taken to hospital by London's air ambulance. We remain on the scene."
